A famous spot in France, St Etienne abandoned church?

Check out this photograph of a stunning abandoned church in St. Etienne, would you like to visit this place? Love how the image shows nature reclaiming this fantastic building. A great example of the fact that order will always return to disorder, or so you might think. In reality this image is in fact a photoshopped image of the Cathedrale Bourges which can be seen on wikipedia here. Very good graphic work from the artist, but happily the building is very much intact, what a waste it would have been had it been derelict. The figure in the image is the real giveaway here. If you like this image please share it with your friends and family.

Perspective is defined as:

“The art of representing three-dimensional objects on a two-dimensional surface so as to give the right impression of their height, width, depth, and position in relation to each other.”

With regards to perspective in photography, we are talking about the spatial relationship objects have to one another from the perspective of the camera lens.

Things that are further away seem small compared to objects closer to the camera. Parallel lines appear to get closer together the further away they are. Think of tall buildings appearing to go almost to a point as you look up at them or a straight road reaching out into the distance and getting narrower the further it stretches away from us.

Wide angle lenses can greatly exaggerate perspective, distorting the image captured particularly so with lenses wider than 16mm and particularly towards the edges of the frame. Fish-eye lenses create surreal images from the most mundane of scenes. Wider angle lenses make objects appear further way from one another. Telephoto lens compress objects captured making them appear closer together from front to back.

Sometimes this can cause problems for photographers capturing photos of buildings, to combat this tilt and shift lenses can be used which can offset the effects of perspective as they are angled upwards.

The video above perfectly demonstrates how positioning people can provide funny consequences even with mid range lenses which in themselves aren’t having any effect on the captured image. It is the subjects and their relationship to one another and the camera that provide the humorous illusions.

Having Fun with Video

I seem to have a developed a growing interest with video in recent months, not in a professional capacity but as a fun thing to do. Maybe I can use it to develop the blog over time also.

Having been a stills photographer for many years, I have an increasing interest in Video, both capture and post editing. While I am at a very basic point in my learning, I am really enjoying the learning process. I have recently done some makeup tip tutorials to compliment our makeover photography (coming soon) but used my DSLR for this.

goprohero 3 and sony vegas platinum image

Here are a couple of recent efforts (be kind) captured using a Go Pro Hero 3 and edited using Sony Vegas.

What’s the point?

The first video was done to learn how to speed up and slow down the footage using the editing software and was very easy to do in Sony Vegas.

The second was done to join different video sequences together and adjusting the volume between background music and the audio track from the original captured video. I was advised to keep the video capture sequence down to short bursts 30 seconds to 1 minute to make it easier to edit later, but having used Sony Vegas a few times now it is just as easy to split the video into shorter sequences later.

HD capture

The camera is also capable of capturing in HD, although I have not done so in the two examples above. I figured the lower resolution is ok while I am still playing around with it.

Portability

I love using the GoPro Hero 3 mainly because it is so handy to carry around with me being small enough to fit into my pocket. Unlike my Canon DSLR, which is also great to use for video capture (used in the makeup tips tutorial I mentioned earlier) but much harder to conveniently carry around.

Weatherproofed

The GoPro Hero also comes in a protective case which keeps it weather proof and water proof, so will be looking to put that to the test in future.
